If you like upbeat, straight ahead jazz delivered by a confident singer who phrases with ease and a bit of a swagger, backed by a smokin’ piano trio, then “This is Carolyn Joyce” with the Tony Pacini Trio is the album for you. Joyce’s tone is clear, her diction impeccable, sense of time relaxed, and her sensuous, alto voice is rich as cheesecake. Included are several well known standards to put the listener in familiar territory, but the arrangements may take a slight twist to delight and surprise the ear. Joyce includes only three ballads which cleanse the listening palate before picking things up again. Several of the tunes are older standards which are not commonly heard, so for many listeners, “new” discoveries lie ahead. “All of the songs are tied together because each presents a particular philosophy about life or about love.” says Joyce.
This is Carolyn Joyce’s debut jazz album, and she selected pianist Tony Pacini and his trio for this project because their energetic live performances and swinging, tight sound make Joyce feel so good. “When I listen to these guys at a club, I grin and tap my foot all night long, waiting for the next cleverly placed musical quote from Tony, or for his next special arrangement of a well-known standard. Singing with such a great piano trio allows a singer to relax and do her best work. I’m really proud of this album.” explains Joyce.
The Tony Pacini Trio is Tony Pacini, piano; Ed Bennett, bass, and Tim Rap,drums.
